Long Time

Zan had hoped Destiny wouldn't ask him about the locket, but it looked like he wasn't going to be so lucky. He nibbled at his final slice of pizza, prolonging the silence as his mind reeled with options. "It's just a good luck charm," he finally answered. He paused again and glanced over at her. She'd just spilled her life's story, and here he was, refusing to give her the same. Was that really fair?

"And that's... what I usually tell people who ask." He leaned back and sighed, shaking his head a little. "But it's not really the truth." His gaze dropped and he fiddled with his napkin. He would have thought by now he'd be able to talk about this more easily. But apparently not. "It actually belonged to someone I cared a great deal for, but..."

As images of that fateful day invaded his mind, he visibly flinched and he closed his eyes. Immediately, the old emotions surfaced, reminding him that he'd never worked through them. He shook his head. He couldn't do it. Not today.

"But that was a long time ago," he finished lamely. Staring at his pop, he finished it off, leaving just a couple ice cubes. It took a moment for his eyes to snap back up at Destiny. "You wanna go to a movie?" The question was out of the blue, but he really didn't want to say goodnight yet, and they were both done eating.

Getting back outside, Tal was a little surprised when Brooke came to sit next to him. She'd been so quiet earlier, Tal figured she'd just revert back to her silence again. He'd now been proven wrong though.

"I'm just moving a mile or so away from where I'm at now," he admitted. "Not far. I've got two dogs though, and new management isn't being very gracious." He cocked his head at her. Why would she want to help? "You must be incredibly bored, he mused. "But if you really want to haul boxes that badly, I could put you to work. If... you don't mind big dogs?" He thumbed inside. "It's actually Zidan's mother and sister."

Watching the two interact, Eli glanced over at Scarlet and arched his eyebrows before thumbing at them and shrugging. Who knew? Maybe a new friendship was actually forming.
