Halfway Presentable

Awesome. See u later!
Zan still grinned as he pushed his phone back into his pocket. After heaving a sigh, he finally got back to his feet and looked at his car. He ran his hand over the mangled fender and shook his head. This was going to take an awful lot of work. But at least tonight he would have a distraction. If not, he would probably end up here all evening and just skip supper...

..."Naw, you go on ahead." Zan bolted the hand-me-down part in place and looked out from the engine at Jett. It was late afternoon by now, and his friend had stopped by to see if he needed help with an offer to go watch the races that night.

"You sure?" Jett leaned on the back of the car. "Saw Hunter washing his car today when I drove by his place. Maybe he'll show Thunder a thing or two."

"First off, Hunter may just be going to watch. Second, they're only doing two nights in a row because too many wanted to race, so most likely, Thunder isn't even going to join in."

Jett snorted. "Yeah, and rumor has it he's gonna crash the newbie races."

"What?" Zan straightened too quickly and almost hit his head on the hood. "He can't do that. He'll cream them - that's why there are newbie races."

"Hey, don't tell me that." Jett held up his hands. "Just passing along what I heard. Sure you don't wanna come see what's up?"

"Yes!" Zan rolled his eyes. "I happen to have gotten a better offer."

Jett blinked. "Oh. Well what'cha doing?"

Zan smirked at him. "Going over to Destiny's for dinner."

"Really?"

"Yeah, why?"

"I dunno... two nights in a row, that's... that's pretty serious for you."

"Nothing more serious than some good food."

Jett shrugged. "Okay... Guess I'll... see ya later then."

"Yeah, okay." Zan looked back down into the engine. "Have fun."

Jett stuck around a few more moments before finally turning. "You too."

...Six o'clock on the nose. Zan had borrowed a car from Tony so at least Jett wouldn't have to keep driving him everywhere. He'd gotten home with just enough time to shower - which took longer than anticipated after being so filthy from the garage - throw on his clean blue jeans, another plain black t-shirt and make himself halfway presentable. He'd stopped at the store on the way and now walked up the short sidewalk. In one hand was a six-pack of vanilla Pepsi, and under the same arm was a six-pack of Dr. Pepper. Stopping at the door, he knocked lightly and waited.

Tal's eyes squinted slightly at Brooke as he tried to figure out her tone. Had she almost started to cry? All he knew was she'd been in a bad situation before. Her comment about her ex gave him one more piece to the puzzle, but he still didn't know what the whole picture was.

He blinked, realizing she'd just asked him a question. "Oh, um... not particularly. I mean, there's always little stuff."

Eva trotted over to Brooke again and nosed her hand before licking it, wagging her stump of a tail as if trying to make her feel better.

Tal grinned. "What kind of work are you looking for? Something you did before or... something you like?"
