Vicious

“Okay...I’ll be there.” Travis finally stood to leave the tack room, and threw Ashlee one last glance over his shoulder before he left. He’d enjoyed this afternoon. There was still so much on his mind and heart in regards to everything that had happened. And he still wasn’t sure what his future held. But...for now...he had at least one thing to look forward to. A new friend, who...he really liked so far...

...By suppertime, Travis found himself seated between Ashlee and Jeff, across from Eric and Stacy at one of the dining room tables. The atmosphere was light tonight. Lighter than it had been in quite a while, and most were enjoying small talk and some laughter.

Twirling some spaghetti around his fork, Travis nudged Ashlee’s knee with his under the table. “So...I hear there are some pretty vicious games of UNO that happen around here in the evenings.”

Jeff heard him and chuckled. “Depends on who plays. You get Clint going, and he’s the vicious one.”

Eric rolled his eyes. “Right. And you’re not.”

“Never!”

Travis grinned and looked at Ashlee. “Sounds like fun.”

Hearing the door, Aaron moved his eyes to see Sam. He wanted to just stay where he was and be just as stubborn as always. But at the moment... he hurt too much to do anything but as ordered. Getting himself up, he managed to stand, but even one step forward was too much, and he almost stumbled, grabbing the chair to keep from falling. He looked dimly over at Sam and shook his head. “I can’t do it by myself.” His voice was strained, his jaw clenched and his face pale. He wasn’t playing around, and he wasn’t trying to be belligerent. “I need the crutches.” He swallowed hard, and for the first time, there was something new in his eyes. A pleading for help.

Garret heard the back door open, but ignored it, and Nate, until he’d completed his set of punches, blocks and kicks to the air. Breathing heavily but controlled, he finally stopped and turned towards the porch. He shook his head and wandered over to ease down on one of the steps and accepted the coffee. “Couple hours, I guess.” He took a sip and sighed. “Couldn’t sleep anymore so...next best thing is working it out.” He shrugged and leaned his head back against the railing, closing his eyes. What was the rest of his day going to be like? He wasn’t sure he wanted another day of nothingness. “You headed to work?”
