Fight

Travis finished walking to the barn and smiled as Ashlee still seemed enthusiastic about the tack room. “Of course I’m still interested. Sparky said I could help with feeding later but until then, I don’t have anything to do.” He came up beside her to walk into the barn with her. “I’ll see you there in a few minutes then.”

Still standing outside, Dylan watched the two disappear, then just patted Sharpshooter’s sweaty neck before turning to untack outside and rub him down. He had more horses that needed exercised before evening, so he’d better get started.

Inside the barn, Travis wandered to the tack room where he stepped inside and breathed in deeply the smell of leather. He’d enjoyed being on the cattle ranch with his dad, but it was different. This...was heaven. He ran his hand along some of the saddles, and felt of the reins from several bridles. Spotting a bench, he eased down to sit and wait, while his eyes took in everything from where the tack pieces were located to the bin full of cleaning and oiling supplies.

Aaron had not expected Sam to actually act on her threat, nor had he gauged her strength correctly. Taken off guard, he was forced to stand and half-trip down the stairs and be pushed forward back to the cell.

Upstairs watching on the monitor, Hal was just taking a sip of coffee as Sam made her move. So surprised, he just about spit out his mouthful as his eyes widened. She certainly had guts. But what about her safety? He kept watching to make sure Aaron didn’t try anything.

Halfway to the cell, Aaron had had enough. He’d underestimated Sam, and that was his own fault, which made him all the madder. Making a sudden stop, he dropped to the floor in spite of the severe pain it caused, and bent forward quickly to throw Sam off balance. With his arm now released, he dropped back to a crouched position, then spun out of her reach and stood in a combat stance with hands up, ready for a fight. His eyes blazed, but he didn’t threaten just yet. “Back off,” he hissed. “Try that again, and you’ll regret it.”
