Listing to Justin on the phone Nate nodded his head thoughtfully. Everything Justin said made sense. He wished things were different and he could come help bit Justin was the last person he probable would want to see.
"Alright I'll see what I can do. Thanks Justin."
Hanging up the phone and going back into the kitchen Nate sits with Laura at the small table. Giving her a quick run down on what Justin had said he let out a long sign. He had no idea what to do still. He didn't know enough about Garret to know he liked more than ice cream.
"I know what to do now, but I still don't know how."
...It was a few hours later when Maggie finally got home from school. She'd taken the bus home today, and tears rolled down her face. Seeing his sister in such a state Nate was worried and went over to her kneeling down beside her.
"Whats wrong sweet heart?"
A short description, and talking through tears let to the conclusion that Maggie's bus ride home had been less than enjoyable. Kids could be so cruel to anyone who was different. It hurt Nate so much to see his sister treated this way. She wanted nothing more to be friends with everyone and to be independent. But than stuff like this happened and it just set this backward too.
Now sitting down in the kitchen with her Nate placed her jar of dill pickles in front of her. Her face was still stained with tears but she had calmed down a little bit. Seeing the jar she smiled a little before turning and looking down the hall and than back to Nate.
"Can I see if Garret wants some too?"
"Of course."
Getting up from the table and carrying the jar Maggie goes down the hall and whipes the tears away before knocking. Opening the door a little and peeking in Maggie enters seeing Garret was awake. Entering Maggie goes over to the bed and just stands for a long moment before looking at Garret.
"Dill pickles are my comfort food when I am sad. I didn't have a good day today, so I wondered if you'd like to have a pickle with me."
Not getting any reply Maggie just sits there for a moment before trying to open the jar herself. Struggling she just didn't have the strength to open it. Trying again she became frustrated and tears started to emerge from her eyes again. She just wanted to do something nice, but she couldn't even do that right.
